Elmira, NY -- Less than a week from earning its first win of the season, the Elmira College men's ice hockey team will look to build on that result this weekend when the Soaring Eagles take on No. 11 nationally ranked Hobart College. EC and the Statesmen will square off this Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena in Pine Valley, NY.
Last Time OutThe Soaring Eagles are fresh off a 5-2 road win against Nazareth College. Elmira surrendered its quickest goal of the season, one that was tallied just 2:50 into the first period. However,
Alexander Taulien '18 answered for the Purple and Gold a little over a minute later to even things at one apiece. Following a scoreless second period, Elmira's offense exploded for four third period goals, including a shorthanded tally by
Carter Shinkaruk '16 that would hold up as the game winner.
Introducing Sandro AeschlimannIn Elmira's win over the Golden Flyers, EC saw its starting goaltender,
Sal Magliocco '17, forced to leave the game just 3:14 into the first period.
Sandro Aeschlimann '19 got the call to step-in and serve as Elmira's netminder for the remainder of the game, as he entered the contest with a one-goal deficit. Aeschlimann, a rookie from Zäziwil, Switzerland, played the remaining 56:46, making 31 saves en route to a 5-2 win, his first and Elmira's first of the season.
Fast Start for SimpsonRob Simpson '16 enters the weekend as Elmira's leading-scorer for defensemen with three points on three assists. Simpson is off to the best start of his collegiate career scoring wise, averaging 0.75 points per game. Last year Simpson averaged 0.32 points per game, which was a career-best.
Keep an Eye on the PPElmira and Hobart have scored three power-play goals apiece this season. However, EC has scored its three man-up goals on fewer chances, converting on 15 percent of its tries compared to Hobart's 11.1 percent success rate. Hobart has been exceptional this year when on the penalty kill, as the Statesmen have successfully killed 28-of-31 chances, limiting opponents to a 9.7 power-play scoring percentage. On the flipside, Elmira is allowing power-play goals 25 percent of the time. Look for this to be one of the keys in this weekend's games.
Scouting the StatesmenAfter opening the season with a loss to Babson College, the Statesmen have gone on a five-game unbeaten streak, going 4-0-1 in those contests. In Hobart's four wins, the squad has outscored their opponents on average by 3.5 goals per game. Pacing Hobart's offense during that stretch has been fourth-year forward Mac Olson, who has logged eight of his team-leading nine points in his last four games. Fellow classmate Brad Robbins is also a player to watch out for, as he enters Friday's game with eight points on four goals and four assists. Defensively, Lino Chimienti has proven to be Hobart's go-to guy in the cage. In five appearances, Chimienti has gone 4-0-1, making 131 saves during that time with a 1.31 goals against average.
