Soaring Eagles Split Matches as Shade Becomes Elmira’s All-Time Leader in Digs

Greenville, PA -- After splitting matches on the opening day of the Thiel College Tournament, the No. 12 nationally ranked Elmira College men's volleyball team (5-5) once again traded a pair of wins with their opponents today, dropping a 3-0 decision to Mount St. Joseph University before handing Fontbonne University a 3-0 loss.  Rob Shade '15 logged a match-high 14 digs against Mount St. Joseph, giving him 766 career digs, making Shade Elmira College's all-time leader in career digs.
 
Shade takes over the number one spot from former AVCA All-American, Michael Vellutato '14, who previously held the record with 763 career digs.  Making Shade's accomplishment even more impressive is that he has been able to accumulate his 766 digs in just over two seasons.
 
Elmira starting setter, Carlos Faccio '16, totaled 59 assists this afternoon en route to being named to the Thiel College All-Tournament Team.  Faccio concluded the weekend of play with 118 assists, including a pair of 30-plus assist efforts, one of which was against Fontbonne this afternoon when he assisted on 33 kills.

In the day's opening game, Elmira struggled on offense, hitting just .088 for the entire match en route to a 3-0 loss.  Third-year outside hitter Erik Griffin '16 turned-in a match-high 12 kills, making him the only player on either team to register double-digit kills.  Faccio added 26 assists and seven digs while Shade came up with a match-high 14 digs.  Of Shade's 14 digs, his 12th one of the match broke Elmira's all-time record for career digs.

Elmira College 3, Fontbonne University 0 -- 25-21, 25-21, 25-18

Elmira saw much more success in their second match of the afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles made quick work of Fontbonne, downing the Griffins in three straight sets. Felix Garcia Ramos '16 led the Elmira charge with a team-high 10 kills while Faccio chipped-in with 33 helpers and eight digs.  Co-Captain Evan Clarke '15 also led EC's defense with nine digs.
 
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action this Thursday, February 5th when Elmira plays in their home-opener against No. 8 nationally ranked UC Santa Cruz.  Match-time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium.
