NCAA Tournament Bracket
Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's ice hockey team was on the brink of elimination in last week's NCAA Quarterfinal game, facing a 2-1 deficit and down a man with two minutes left in regulation. But a Trinity College penalty, an overtime-forcing goal by
Brooke Wilgosh '15, and a power-play game-winner by
Erin Weston '15 later has the Soaring Eagles back in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals for the second time in three years.
Two years ago, playing on an unfamiliar rink in Minnesota, EC skated away with their third national title. This year, however, Elmira gets to play in an arena in which they have won at three times already this season, the Stafford Ice Arena in Plattsburgh, NY. Familiarity will hopefully be a difference-maker for the Purple and Gold as they look to pick-up a NCAA-record fourth national championship.
To once again reach the summit, EC will need to knock-off WIAC Champion Wisconsin-River Falls, who entered the 2015 NCAA Tournament as the hottest team in the nation, having not lost since December 10th. That run continued in the NCAA Quarterfinals as the Falcons took down Lake Forest College, 3-1, last Saturday to punch their ticket to their second straight, and fourth overall, NCAA Semifinal appearance.
Elmira has made it to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals seven other times, with two of those games played against Wisconsin-River Falls. The Soaring Eagles advanced past the Falcons both times, first in 2002-03 and again in 2008-09, in the programs' only two meetings.
The Soaring Eagles will look to make it three straight over Wisconsin-River Falls and advance to their second NCAA Championship game in three years on Friday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena in Plattsburgh, NY. Tickets are sold as one-day passes, for either Friday or Saturday, and are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
