Elmira, NY -- The No. 11 Elmira College men's volleyball team will compete in their second UVC Tri-Match of the season this weekend in Cambridge, MA. Elmira will kick-off the tournament on Saturday, March 7th against host No. 13 MIT at 11:00 a.m.
On a RollAfter starting the season with an overall record of 5-6, the Purple and Gold have turned things around, winning the past 11 of their past 13 matches. The EC men are also on a five-match winning streak that started with a 3-2 win over then-No. 6 Nazareth College. In the five-game stretch, the EC men have only given up three total sets, and have swept the past three matchups. The three-game streak of sweeping opponents matches a program-best.
Welcome the ClubErik Griffin '16 totaled 61 kills last week, upping his career total to 1,008. He becomes the second player in EC program history to reach the 1,000-kill plateau, joining former teammate
Ryan Gelenitis '14.
Keep them ComingGriffin's 61 kills led the Soaring Eagles to a perfect 5-0 week, which included the Purple and Gold's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season. Griffin took home numerous awards in recognition for his play, including the UVC Player of the Week, the Corvias ECAC North Region Player of the Week, and also the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Men's Division III National Player of the Week. He is the first player in EC men's volleyball history to be named the AVCA National Player of the Week.
A Couple of the Best In the CountryErik Griffin '16 and
Carlos Faccio '16 rank as two of the best players in NCAA Division III Volleyball at their respective positions. Griffin leads the country in kills per set with 4.35 and ranks second in points per set with 4.90, just 0.10 behind first. Faccio ranks third in the country in assists per set with 10.40 and tied for fourth in the country in aces per set with 0.69. Elmira is the only team to have two players in the top five in both kills and assists per set.
