Highlights | Interview with Ashton Hogan '15 | Interview with Moorea Spoljaric '16
Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team put forth one of their best all-around performances of the season in today's 16-7 victory over visiting SUNY Canton. Overall, the Soaring Eagles outshot the Roos 34-27, forced 26 Canton turnovers, and dominated with a 31-17 advantage in draw controls. In addition, EC's two-headed attack of
Ashton Hogan'15 and
Moorea Spoljaric'16 each found another way to add to their respective legacies as Hogan recorded her 100th career goal while Spoljaric matched the Elmira single-game record for points tallied.
Hogan, who needed six goals to join Spoljaric and three others in EC's 100-goal club, got just what she needed with six goals and one assist in the win. It looked as though her 100th goal would have to come another day as the clock ticked down to zero, but Hogan would bounce one past the Canton goaltender with 13 seconds for her sixth goal of the game. The senior talent also becomes the second-fastest player to reach 100 career goals, doing so in 34 games. The EC record holder is Lindsay Mitchell '12, who reached 100 career goals in 33 games.
Spoljaric, more known for her scoring ability than anything else, was Elmira's top distributor today. She scored three goals against the Roos, but her playmaking ability set up seven more EC scores as she set a new career-high with those seven assists. Spoljaric's 10 total points matches Elmira's single-game high for points as today's game against Canton marks just the second time in EC history that 10 points were scored in a single game, the other coming in 2004.
The Soaring Eagles also got scoring contributions from
Marissa Mongillo'15,
Marisa Carr'18, Kyle Connell'17,
Jordyn Rousselle'18, and
Kyra McDonald'18. Mongillo recorded her first hat trick of the season while the other four players each tallied one goal.
EC got off to a quick start, scoring five goals in the first 10:10 of the opening half. Three of those goals came from Hogan as she eyed her 100th goal in the first half. However, Elmira's offense would go quiet for the next 14 minutes of the game as the game remained 5-0 until 5:50 left on the clock. That is when Mongillo scored the first of her three goals, making it 6-0. Canton finally got on the board less than a minute later to make it 6-1, but that is how the score would stand heading into halftime.
Spoljaric would get the scoring started coming out of halftime, extending EC's lead to 7-1, but back-to-back goals from the Roos gave Canton a bit of momentum. That momentum, however, would be suppressed by the Soaring Eagles as the combined efforts of
Lindsay Wargo'17 in the net and EC's attack created a four-goal run that made it an 11-3 game with 16 minutes left to play. Wargo was tested often in the second half but the sophomore came up with nine of her 13 total saves in the final 30 minutes to keep Canton's scoring at a minimum.
Canton scored three goals in a three-minute span, making it 12-6, but EC would get goals from McDonald, Hogan, Connell, and Hogan again with 13 seconds left, to put away the 16-7 victory. McDonald's goal, which came on Spoljaric's seventh assist, was her first career goal.
EC has a quick turnaround as they head out to take on Farmingdale State tomorrow, April 13th at 5:00 p.m.
