Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College men's lacrosse team hung with perennial Empire 8 Conference power St. John Fisher College through the game's first 15 minutes, but the Cardinals would eventually pull away to down the Soaring Eagles, 17-4. Tested all day long,
Wyatt Katsos '17 made 17 saves in net for the Purple and Gold.
Elmira's goals were scored by
Anthony LaRusso '17 and
Eric Hallman '15, who each tallied two scores on the day. Both of LaRusso's goals were unassisted while
PJ Tessier'17 assisted on Hallman's first score for EC's other point of the day.
LaRusso got the Soaring Eagles off to a good start as he opened the game's scoring with 9:37 to play in the first quarter, giving EC a 1-0 lead. Fisher answered back less than a minute later to knot the game up at one and then tacked on two more goals, the last of which came at the 1:18 mark of the first quarter, to take a 3-1 lead. The Purple and Gold would not go away, however, as Hallman made it a 3-2 game with just six seconds on the clock, giving EC momentum heading into the second quarter.
Although the Soaring Eagles were held scoreless in the second quarter, their defense stepped-up to and kept the Cardinals in check. St. John Fisher scored three goals in the quarter, all by Dante Giordano, but the damage could have been much more severe if not for the six saves produced by Katsos. Elmira trailed the Cardinals 6-2 at the break.
The third quarter was all St. John Fisher as they did not allow a single EC goal for the second straight quarter while scoring six of their own to take a 12-2 lead. The Purple and Gold did get two additional goals in the fourth quarter, one each from LaRusso and Hallman, but the Cardinals would add five to their total bringing it to the 17-4 finish.
EC returns home for an Empire 8 contest against Utica College on Saturday, April 18th at 3:00 p.m. Saturday is also senior day where this year's five graduating team members will be recognized pre-game.
