Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College softball team could not halt No. 23 Alfred University's 16-game win streak as the Saxons downed the Soaring Eagles 11-1 and 15-0 in Friday's Empire 8 doubleheader. EC was able to record just seven hits in the two games, with two each from
Julianne Heggie '16 and
Emily Carlin '17.
Heggie was 2-for-3 in game one and 0-2 in game two, while Carlin was 2-for-5 on the day and scored EC's lone run. Also getting hits were
Hannah Lundgren '18,
Chelsea Storch '18, and
Kennedy Harper '18.
Game One: Alfred 11, Elmira 1 (F/5)Alfred showed why they have the ninth-best scoring offense in the nation early in the first game of the doubleheader, plating all 11 runs in the first three innings of the game. The Soaring Eagles got runners into scoring position in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, but were only able to push across the one run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Carlin came home to score, advancing home on a failed strikeout-throw out situation by the Saxons.
Game Two: Alfred 15, Elmira 0 (F/5)EC did their best to limit the damage caused by Alfred's offense in the first couple innings of the second game, but after allowing two runs in the first inning, the Soaring Eagles saw the Saxons plate four runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. On the flip side, Elmira was unable to get anything going against Kerri Keeler as the Alfred pitcher set down the first six EC batters in order.
The Soaring Eagles ran into some trouble in the third inning as the Saxons scored another five runs, three of which came from a Liz Thompson home run. Then, after a scoreless fourth inning, an error helped extend the fifth inning and led to four unearned Alfred runs which brought the score to the 15-0 final.
EC is back in action tomorrow, April 18th as they host Houghton College in another Empire 8 doubleheader. The first of the two games is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
