Women's Soccer Migrates North for Pair of Weekend Games

The Elmira College women's soccer team travels to North Country this weekend to end its season-opening six-game non-conference stretch with games against Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University.

The Soaring Eagles will attempt to dethrone the Golden Knights on Friday, September 18th at 4:00 p.m. at Hantz Turf Field. On Saturday, September 19th at 12:00 p.m., the Saints play host to EC at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

Last Time Out
The EC defense limited Bard College's offensive attack to a single goal but for the third time in four games, the Soaring Eagles were held off of the scoreboard in the 1-0 loss. Bard senior Abbey Labrecque headed in the only score of the contest in the 34th minute. Goalkeepers Amanda Banner '17 and Gabe Carmona '18 each played a half and combined for seven saves. The Raptors outshot EC 19-to-9.

Empire 8 Stats Leaders
Elmira goalies Banner and Carmona both rank among the top-five in the Empire 8 Conference in saves per game. Carmona comes in at No. 3 with six saves per game while Banner is fifth with five per.

Carmona vs.Clarkson & St. Lawrence
Last season, Carmona earned the start in goal against the Golden Knights and the Saints on back-to-back days. Against Clarkson, she delivered her only shutout victory of the season with 11 saves. The following day, she made 13 saves – second-highest single-game total from her rookie season – in a loss to St. Lawrence. As a result, Carmona was named the E8 Defensive Player of the Week.

Series History
Since 2000, Elmira and Clarkson have split the series, 4-4-1. The two programs have met every year since 2009 with the Purple and Gold taking last year's game, 1-0, despite being outshot by 16. Sara Kazerouni '18 scored her first career goal in the 86th minute for the win and Carmona made 11 saves to preserve the shutout.

The Soaring Eagles have only one win against St. Lawrence since the 2002 season and are 1-12 against the Saints in that span. The last victory against St. Lawrence came on the road in 2004, when EC pulled out a 1-0 victory. In 2014, the Saints won 2-0 on a pair of first-half goals. Carmona needed to make 13 saves in the losing-effort.
