Women's Soccer Hosts Mary Washington in Sunday's Home Opener

Elmira, NY -- After playing on the road in Buffalo, NY to begin the 2015 season, the Elmira College women's soccer team returns to Campus Field for its home opener on Sunday, September 6th against the University of Mary Washington at 12:00 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Soaring Eagles suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Buffalo State on September 1st at Coyer Field. EC limited the Bengals to a single goal in the first half although Buffalo State fired 13 shots in the period. Meghan Allen opened the scoring for the home club with her first of two goals on the day in the 12th minute. Maddie Miller's '17 attempt for the equalizer was in the 23rd minute was saved by Buffalo State goalie Jessica McCarey and the Bengals would add two more scores in the second half for insurance. Gabe Carmona '18 made seven saves in goal for Elmira.

Soaring Eagles in Home Openers
The Elmira College women have a 1-1-1 record in their last three home openers, with the most recent victory coming in 2013 over Lycoming College, 4-0. In addition, the Soaring Eagles have gone an even 7-7-2 in home openers since 2000. The new millennium began with wins in four of the first five such contests.

Home-Field Advantage
Over the last two seasons, the Purple and Gold are 8-4-3 at the friendly confines of Campus Field. In 2014, the EC defense limited opponents to an average of one goal per game on its home pitch. In three games between the posts for Elmira, Amanda Banner '17 recorded two shutouts with a .955 save percentage and a minute 0.29 goals-against average. Offensively, Sara Kazerouni '18 netted all three of her goals at home.

Series History
Sunday's matchup will mark the first-ever in the "Battle of the Birds" between the Soaring Eagles and the Eagles of Mary Washington.

Scouting Mary Washington
UMW head coach Corey Hewson is in his eighth season at the helm of the Eagles. The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Co-Coach of the Year in 2010, Hewson guided Mary Washington to a 12-7-2 overall record last season and a berth in the CAC Tournament Championship Game, where the Eagles eventually lost to Frostburg State, 2-0. An All-CAC selection a year ago, senior Lizzie Weast returns after scoring two goals and two assists in 2014. Weast recorded an assist in the 2-0 victory over Shenandoah University to open the season. The Eagles travel to SUNY Geneseo for a 7:00 p.m. game on Friday, September 4th before heading to Elmira.

Looking Ahead
Elmira College will host Plattsburgh State on Saturday, September 12th at 12 p.m. at Campus Field. It will be the only the third game between the Soaring Eagles and the Cardinals in the last 16 years. Last season, EC dropped a 1-0 decision in Plattsburgh despite 15 saves from Carmona – the second-most in a single game in program history.
