Rye, NY -- The Elmira College men's ice hockey team dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Manhattanville College on a penalty shot with only 1.2 seconds remaining in the extra period on Friday night.
The Valiants nearly scored the game-winner inside the final 10 seconds of overtime, as Matt Coleman ringed a shot off of the left post. With the puck loose inside of the crease, EC defenseman
Rob Simpson '16 knocked the net off its moorings, resulting in a Manhattanville penalty shot with only 1.2 seconds left in overtime. Stephen Gaul then beat Elmira netminder
Sal Magliocco '17 five-hole for the game-winning goal.
Kenny Tenzca '19 gave the Soaring Eagles a brief 2-1 lead early in the second period when
Tommy Sumi '16 fed the first-year in the slot from the left wing.
Manhattanville answered with two straight goals to take its first lead of the night. Keagan Waugh knotted the game at 2-all with the first of two power-play goals from the Valiants on the night. Nigel Slade then put the home squad ahead 3-2 at the 15:30 mark in the second period. Elmira would come back to even the game before the end of the period, as
Alexander Taulien '17 netted his second goal of the game with 10 seconds left before the second intermission.
Each team scored once on the power play in the third, the latter from
Carter Shinkaruk '16 at 13:55. His team-leading 17th goal of the season came with the Soaring Eagles on a 5-on-3 advantage. He slapped home a one-timer from the left faceoff circle to tie the game at 4-4.
Not only did Shinkaruk score the equalizer with a two-man advantage, the Elmira special teams came up big late in the third period by killing off a Manhattanville 5-on-3 situation, forcing overtime.
Turning PointThe Soaring Eagles were a mere 1.2 seconds away from earning one point in the conference standings with a draw against the Valiants. However, the Simpson penalty gave Gaul a one-on-one chance against Magliocco, and the Manhattanville sophomore responded with his third game-winning goal of the season.
