PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- In cold wintery conditions under the lights at the Murray Athletic Center, the Elmira College women's soccer team lost a hard-fought contest to Alfred State 2-0 on Tuesday, October 25th.
The Purple and Gold started the game quick getting four shots off in the first nine minutes of action.
Jennifer Flynn '20 had two shots in the first nine minutes, both of which were saved by the Pioneer's goalkeeper Allison Danielak. Flynn's best opportunity came when she dribbled the ball down the right side of the field in the fourth minute and beat a defender, but her shot was nabbed out of the air by Danielak.
Julia Yanarella put the Pioneers on the board first in the 15th minute, when she received a pass from Brooke Geibel on the left side of the box and buried a shot past EC's goalie
Amanda Banner '17.
The Purple and Gold had a few more offensive chances before the end of the half. Flynn had another shot at a goal in the 40th minute, but it was again saved by Danielak.
The Soaring Eagles would hold the Pioneers scoreless for the first 26 minutes of the second half until Brooke Geibel scored the second goal for Alfred State.
Elmira was unable to get the same type of offensive momentum in the second half that it had in the first half. After 13 first half shots, the Soaring Eagles only fired four shots in the second.
The Soaring Eagles' best opportunity in the second stanza came off of the foot of
Jordyn Rousselle '18 when she gained control of a pass in front of the net and turned to shoot, but the ball flew just wide of the net.
Turning Point
Elmira and Alfred State battled it out for 57 minutes in a one-goal contest. Each team seemed to play evenly, with one early goal being the difference. The game only seemed to be in the Pioneers' hands when they scored the second goal.
