ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team dropped a straight-sets decision to the University of Rochester in the Soaring Eagles' 2016 regular-season home finale Tuesday night at Speidel Gymnasium.
In a special pre-match ceremony, the Soaring Eagles honored the two members of the graduating Class of 2017 –
Alicia Day '17 and
Kelsey Ray '17 – in the final home match of their EC careers. The middles combined for nine of Elmira's 22 kills against the Yellowjackets. Day finished second on the team with six kills, and on a night that the EC offense turned in a subpar performance, the senior from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, hit at an efficient rate of .214.
U of R looked sharp in all phases en route to its 20th victory of the season. In the first set alone, the Yellowjackets registered a match-best .312 attack percentage to go along with four aces and four blocks.
In the second set, however, the Purple and Gold rallied to take an early 3-1 lead, with two of those points coming by way of a kill from
Natalie Schieder '19. EC maintained the lead, 10-8, following another kill from Schieder, but the visitors won the next three points to move ahead by one. Kills from Day and
Karina Hastings '19 knotted the match twice at 13- and 14-all, but Rochester responded with four straight points to take the lead in the set for good.
In the decisive third set, the Yellowjackets saw their 2-0 advantage slip away, as Elmira captured four of the next five points. A kill from Ray gave the Soaring Eagles a 4-3 advantage, but that marked the only time EC led Rochester in the third set, and the Yellowjackets all but sealed the victory with an ensuing 7-1 run.
