Harkins, Granato Named EC Athletes of the Week

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The high-scoring efforts of men's basketball 3-point marksman Hayden Harkins '18 and women's ice hockey second-year forward Katie Granato '19 earned the two student-athletes the Elmira College Athlete of the Week Awards for the week ending November 20th.

Harkins led the EC men with 15.0 points per game to open the season and also nabbed All-Tournament Team honors at the Max Ziel Men's Basketball Tournament at Oswego State over the weekend. The junior continued to display his lethal 3-point shooting with 13 of his 15 made field goals coming from beyond the arc.

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Harkins twice scored 18 points during the week, as he paced the Soaring Eagles in scoring in both the season opener at Hilbert on Tuesday, November 15th and the victory over SUNY Maritime College on Saturday, November 19th. Against the Hawks, the 6-foot 5-inch forward finished 4-for-8 from 3-point range, while shooting 6-for-14 from deep in the 70-68 win over the Privateers. Sandwiched in-between those contests was a nine-point effort on a trio of treys in the first round of the Max Ziel Tournament against SUNY Canton on Friday, November 18th.

Through the first week of competition, Harkins sits atop the Empire 8 Conference leaderboards in overall 3-point makes (13) and on a per-game basis (4.3). His six 3-pointers in the win over SUNY Maritime are also tied for the most in a game by any E8 player on the young season.

The Soaring Eagles will head to the University of Rochester for the Lexington Rochester Airport Hotel Tournament, hosted by the Yellowjackets, on Saturday, November 26th, and Sunday, November 27th. EC opens the tournament against Vassar College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Granato had a stellar weekend for the nationally-ranked EC women's ice hockey team, as she extended her streak of games with multiple points to three in a row. She guided the Soaring Eagles to a sweep of Buffalo State with two points in each of the ECAC West Conference matchups.

On Friday, Granato played a crucial role in EC's 2-1 overtime victory. She tallied the game's first goal at the 1:59 mark in the second period. Then in overtime, the Naperville, Illinois, native picked up the primary assist on the game-winner scored by Sarah Hughson '18.

On Saturday, the 5-foot 9-inch forward netted the first and final goals for Elmira, as the Soaring Eagles cruised to a 4-0 shutout. Granato opened the conference tilt with the eventual game-winner at 15:22 in the first period. Then early in the third period, she scored on the power play, her third extra-skater goal of her sophomore season.

Through the first six games of the year, Granato leads the Soaring Eagles with six goals and three power-play tallies, while ranking second in overall points with nine. She is tied for first in the ECAC West Conference in goals and power-play goals per game at 1.00 and 0.50, respectively.

Following the Thanksgiving Break, the third-ranked Elmira women's ice hockey team will return to action to host No. 6 Norwich University at the Murray Athletic Center on Saturday, December 3rd, at 3:00 p.m.
