Women's Basketball Hosts Gallaudet in 2016-17 Home Opener on Sunday

COMPLETE GAME NOTES

ELMIRA, N.Y. --
On Sunday, November 27th, the Elmira College women's basketball team will welcome the Bison of Gallaudet University to Speidel Gymnasium for the Soaring Eagles' 2016-17 home opener at 2:00 p.m.

WEEKEND OVERVIEW
  • After playing the first four games of the season on the road - including two games in North Carolina and one in Virginia - the Soaring Eagles return home to Speidel Gymnasium.
  • Sunday's non-conference contest is the first of a four-game homestand, three of which occur in a five-day span from November 27th to December 1st.
  • The Soaring Eagles and Bison have only one prior meeting between the two programs, a game Gallaudet won 70-62 during the 1982-83 season.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE EFFORTS
  • In the loss to Shenandoah, Elmira's Danielle Cleary and Rachel Vespucci logged a pair of double-double efforts.
  • It marked the first time since the 2014-15 season finale in which Elmira had two players finish with a double-double. The 2014-15 season finale saw three players produce double-doubles (Alex Balara '15, Karli Pochkar '16 & Cleary).
  • Cleary scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down 10 boards. She also registered three blocks, three steals and two assists.
  • The double-double by Cleary marked the seventh time she has done so in her collegiate career.
  • Vespucci produced career numbers with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Her 14 boards are the most by an Elmira player this season and are tied for second-most by a Soaring Eagle in the last two seasons.
  • Vespucci's double-double was a career first.

GALLAUDET AT A GLANCE
  • The Bison visit Elmira for their 2016-17 season opener on Sunday afternoon.
  • Gallaudet is coming off a 15-12 showing a season ago, one that saw the Bison reach the NEAC Tournament Semifinals. Gallaudet bowed out in the semifinal round to eventual runner-up, SUNY Poly.
  • Although the Bison finished with a winning record, most of their success came inside of NEAC league play. Gallaudet went 2-5 against non-conference opponents a year ago.
  • Sabina Shysh enters her junior year as the team's top returning scorer from a season ago. Shysh averaged 12.1 points per game, one of two Bison to average double-digit points during 2015-16.
  • Gallaudet graduated its leading rebounder from a year ago in Danielle Morris, but the squad does bring back low-post presence, Kelsey Hudson.
  • Hudson started in 17 of 26 games played and averaged 7.0 rebounds in those contests. Her 7.0 average ranked second on the team last year.
  • Gallaudet is coached by Stephanie Stevens, sister of current Elmira assistant coach Katie Stevens. Stephanie Stevens begins her fifth year at the helm of the Bison.
