Rochester, NY -- The ninth-ranked Elmira College Men's volleyball team closed the second day of action at the Golden Flyer Invitational, hosted by Nazareth College, with a wins over Hilbert College and D'Youville College on Saturday.
The Soaring Eagles swept the Hawks of Hilbert in straight sets in their first match of the day. EC cruised to the win with a convincing third set, hitting a match-best .400. Aiding the offensive attack were EC's season-high 15 services aces, seven of which came from
Carlos Faccio '16.
Against D'Youville, the Purple and Gold overcame a two-sets-to-one deficit to take the fourth and fifth sets by scores of 25-23 and 15-13, respectively. EC matched the day's highest single-set attacking percentage by once again hitting at a .400 clip in the decisive fifth set.
Mike Ellison '16 paced the Soaring Eagles with 27 kills and eight digs. Faccio tossed up five more assists and registered a season-high 54 assists.
Inside the Box (Hilbert College)- Elmira recorded a team attack percentage of .260, while Hilbert finished with a .157 percentage.
- EC led in both aces, 15-to-4, and total blocks, 7-to-2.
- Mark Kawecki '17 recorded a team-high nine kills.
- Faccio served seven aces and assisted on 33 kills.
- Andrew Johnson '16 led all players with four total blocks.
- Michael Podgomy paced the Hilbert offense with seven kills.
Inside the Box (D'Youville College)- Elmira earned two-point wins in both the fourth and fifth sets to complete the comeback.
- Ellison's 27 kills were a match-high, 10 more than the next closest player from either team, while he hit at a superb .467.
- Ellison also recorded a team-high eight digs.
- Kawecki finished with 17 kills.
- Faccio had 54 assists, six digs and five aces.
- Dylan Kuhn '16 led all players with six total blocks.
- Brock Tetreault paced D'Youville with 17 kills.
- EC had a .258 attack percentage as a team, as compared to a .230 percentage for D'Youville.
News and Notes- Elmira is now 4-0 in five-set matches this season.
- After earning a season-high 50 assists on Friday against Johnson & Wales, he bested his season best with 54 against D'Youville.
- Ellison struck for 20-plus kills for the second time in the Golden Flyer Invitational, setting a new season high with 27 against the Spartans.
- Ellison's .467 attack percentage is also his best of the season in matches with double-digit total attacks.
- For his efforts, Ellison was named to the All-Tournament Team.
- Faccio's seven aces are one shy of his program-record eight he served in the win over Thiel College on January 30th.
- The Soaring Eagles are now 7-0 all-time against Hilbert.
