Canton, NY -- A dominate first-half performance helped the host Kangaroos of SUNY Canton defeat the Elmira College women's lacrosse team by a final score of 15-7 Sunday afternoon.
The 'Roos outscored the Soaring Eagles 10-1 in the first half and used a 10-goal run bridging both halves to jump ahead by as much as 11-1.
After SUNY Canton scored the opening tally,
Laura Powell '16 won the draw control, setting up
Moorea Spoljaric '16 for the game-tying goal only 44 seconds later. The EC offense, however, went cold for the remainder of the opening stanza. The Soaring Eagles committed 19 turnovers in the remaining 25-plus minutes of the half and managed only to release only two more shots in the period.
Meanwhile, Kangaroos senior Robyn Carroll led her team to on a 10-goal run spanning the 24:45 mark of the first half until 27:29 of the second half. Carroll netted five of SUNY Canton's goals in the decisive rally.
Elmira did outscore the 'Roos 6-5 in the final 30 minutes of play, but it was too little too late. Spoljaric scored back-to-back goals to end a scoring drought that lasted 30:13. First-year talents
Hayley Baker '19 and
Macy Huntley '19 tacked on consecutive goals to trim the deficit to 12-5 with 15:36 left in regulation, but seven was as close as the Soaring Eagles would come to the SUNY Canton lead.
Turning Point
EC's inability to maintain possession in the first half proved to be fatal for the Soaring Eagles. Not only did the Purple and Gold muster a mere four shots on goal in the entire 30 minutes, but the Elmira women turned the ball over 20 times in the first half. Perhaps the most telling statistical discrepancy can be seen in the clear totals; SUNY Canton was a perfect 11-for-11 on clears in the first half of play, while EC was only successful on 7-of-19 attempts.
