Presidents Top Elmira in E8 Field Hockey Opener

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Elmira College field hockey team opened Empire 8 Conference play bright and early this morning, as the Soaring Eagles traveled to Washington, Pa., to face Washington & Jefferson College. Elmira surrendered four first-half goals, which proved to be too much to overcome, as the Presidents marched away with a 6-0 conference-opening win.
 
Washington & Jefferson utilized a lopsided shot total to earn today's win, peppering Elmira's netminders with 38 shots, 27 of which found their way on frame. Of the team's 38 shots, 22 came in the first half alone.
 
Julie Hockenberger '18 got the start in cage for Elmira and faced a barrage shot attempts. She made 11 saves in 56:21 of action, before Tina O'Donnell '20 entered the contest for the final 13:39 of regulation. O'Donnell finished with four saves in that time.  
 
Turning Point
After surrendering the game's first goal 3:04 into the first half, Elmira settled in and kept the Presidents off the scoreboard for the next 16 minutes. However, EC would allow three goals in a 6:34 span, as Washington & Jefferson put a stranglehold on the match with 4-0 halftime lead.
