Field Hockey Travels to Wells for Non-Conference Tilt

ELMIRA N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team will travel to Aurora, New York, to face Wells College in a non-conference bout on Tuesday, September 20th, at 5:45 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: The Purple and Gold suffered a crushing 1-0 loss to Houghton College in their last match. The only goal allowed in the entire contest came in the 70th minute off of a penalty corner from the Highlanders. On the scoring play, the Soaring Eagles were able to block the first shot by the Highlanders, but were unable to corral the second chance. This was EC's second loss in a row that came by one goal. Elmira leaned on solid defense and goalkeeping to keep the game a 0-0 contest late. The Purple and Gold were outshot, producing 13 while Houghton finished with 24. Goalkeeper Julie Hockenberger '18 saved 13 shots in the match, keeping the score close throughout.

SO CLOSE FOR A SECOND TIME: Elmira's last two contests were both one goal losses. On September 14th, the Purple and Gold lost in double overtime to Oswego State at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles played exceptional defense in this game as well, only allowing one goal in regulation. Elmira is no stranger to one-goal matches, they competed in 16 in the last three seasons, with an overall record of 6-10.

SCOUTING WELLS: Wells comes into today's contest with a record of 2-6, after suffering a 3-0 loss at home to Marywood College. Wells was dominated by the Pacers in shots, only getting one shot in the game while Marywood had 23. The Express have struggled to find offense in the early part of the season, scoring nine goals in eight contests. Wells ranks second to last in their conference in goals, only ahead of Keuka College that has played four less games. The Express will need Kate Wells to ignite the offense, as she leads the Express with eight points coming into the game with the Soaring Eagles. She has scored in both of Wells' victories, including the game winner in a 2-1 triumph over Cedar Crest.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Tuesday's contest will be the 13th matchup between the two programs. Elmira has dominated the all-time series, holding a record of 10-1-1. The Purple and Gold won the last three matchups, including a 2-1 victory last season at the MAC. Atu Machika '18 put in the decisive goal in last year's matchup in the 66th minute with a deflection from four yards out.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Soaring Eagles return to Empire 8 Conference competition on Saturday, September 24th, against St. John Fisher College. That contest is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Fisher's Growney Stadium, in Pittsford, New York.
