Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Contest to Mary Washington

Records: Mary Washington (1-1), Elmira (0-2)
Location: Elmira, N.Y. - Campus Field

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- In a rematch of last season's home opener at Campus Field, the Elmira College women's soccer team was bested by the University of Mary Washington, 4-0, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

While the EC offense more than doubled its shot total from its season-opening contest against No. 4 William Smith College, the Purple and Gold only managed five shots, none of which were on target. The spirited Soaring Eagles looked to set the tempo early, as Maddie Miller '17 and Sara Kazerouni '18 each released a shot in the seventh and eighth minutes, respectively, but both sailed wide of the net.

The visiting Eagles responded shortly thereafter, as Marissa Wood ripped a shot across the box from left-to-right past Elmira goalkeeper Amanda Banner '17. Then in the 19th minute, Banner stopped a hard shot from close range by UMW's Lizzie Brooks, but Brielle Mitchell was there to return the rebound and double the lead. Mary Washington added one more before the intermission off of a corner entry and held a 3-0 advantage at the half.

Banner was tested again in the early portion of the second half, as she made five saves in the first 12:06 of the period. With the ball being kicked around inside the box after a corner kick, the Eagles were able to strike again in the 58th minute, as Kaitlyn Higgins drilled the ball through heavy traffic from the top of the box for an unassisted score.

Although the Soaring Eagles came up empty, the Purple and Gold returned to action following the break looking more enthused and energized. The aggressive play translated into more possession within the attacking half of the field, including a pair of corner kicks in the 66th and 90th minutes. The opposition, however, was up to the task and held down the stretch for the shutout.

  • Mary Washington recorded 11 shots in each half, while Elmira was held to five total.
  • The visiting Eagles also held a 5-to-2 advantage in corner kicks over the Soaring Eagles.

News and Notes

  • Sunday's outing was Banner's fifth career game with double-digit saves.
