Women’s Ice Hockey Faces Tough Test at 7th Annual East-West Hockey Classic

ELMIRA, N.Y. --
The No. 2 nationally-ranked Elmira College women's ice hockey team puts its nine-game unbeaten streak on the line this weekend when the Soaring Eagles travel to Northfield, Vermont, to compete in the 7th annual East-West Hockey Classic, hosted by Norwich University. This year's tournament features four of the country's top-five teams, including No. 1 Plattsburgh State, No. 2 Elmira College, No. 4/5 Norwich University and No. 5/4 Adrian College. The Soaring Eagles open play against the Norwich Cadets on Saturday, January 7th, at 1:00 p.m. inside Kreitzberg Arena. 
 
WEEKEND OVERVIEW                           
  • After skating to a 2-2 overtime draw with sixth-ranked Middlebury College, the second-ranked Soaring Eagles continue their challenging non-conference schedule at the 7th annual East-West Hockey Classic, hosted by Norwich University in Northfield, Vt.
  • Elmira opens the East-West Hockey Classic against No. 4/5 Norwich on Saturday, January 7th, at 1:00 p.m. The matchup will be the second meeting between the two non-league foes.
  • Day two of the event will pit the Purple and Gold against either No. 5/4 Adrian College or the top-ranked Cardinals of Plattsburgh State.
  • EC has competed in the East-West Hockey Classic since its inception back in 2010 when it was originally named the Norwich Classic. Elmira is 6-4-2 at the annual tournament, including a 2-3-1 mark against the Cadets.
 
LAST-MINUTE RALLY   
        
  • Elmira trailed 2-0 with less than three minutes to play last time out on the road against sixth-ranked Middlebury.
  • Maddie Evangelous '19 scored EC's first goal of the night at the 17:16 mark of the third, which was followed by the game-tying goal by Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 with exactly one minute remaining in the third.
  • Lippiatt Durnell's game-tying tally is the latest game-tying goal scored by an Elmira skater since December 4, 2010, when former Soaring Eagle Tori Charron, who later transferred to Norwich, scored with five seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime against Utica. Charron would later go on to score the game-winner in OT.
  • Kyle Nelson '17 finished with 22 saves in the overtime draw. She made eight stops in the third period and two very timely saves in the closing seconds of OT to preserve the tie.
 
NORWICH AT A GLANCE                        
  • The No. 4/5 Cadets are 8-1-1 on the year, with their only loss coming at the hands of top-ranked Plattsburgh. Norwich is riding high on a five-game unbeaten streak, which includes three shutout victories.
  • Norwich boasts the nation's fourth-highest scoring offense (4.70 gpg), eighth-best defense (1.20 gpg) and the third-highest scoring power-play unit (26.5%).
  • Sarah Schwenzfeier and Kim Tiberi share the team lead in points with 14 apiece. Schwenzfeier is the team's leading scorer with seven tallies, while Tiberi owns a team-high 13 helpers. Tiberi leads the nation in defensemen scoring with 1.40 points per game.
 
ADRIAN AT A GLANCE             
  • No. 5/4 Adrian enters the tournament with an 8-1-0 record with its only loss coming against top-ranked Plattsburgh at the Cardinal-Panther Classic.
  • The Bulldogs sport the country's second-highest scoring offense (5.00 gpg), as well as the nation's sixth-best power play (23.9%).
  • Adrian has the top three point scorers in the country in Kristin Lewicki (2.70 ppg), Kaylyn Schroka (2.50 ppg) & Sarah Shureb (2.20 ppg). Lewicki & Schroka also share the national lead in assists per game (1.60).
 
PLATTSBURGH AT A GLANCE              
  • Top-ranked Plattsburgh heads into its Saturday matchup against Adrian with a 10-1-0 overall record, with the team's only loss coming against ECAC West foe, Oswego.
  • The Cardinals own the country's sixth-best offense (4.18 gpg), seventh-leading defense (1.18 gpg) and the fourth-best power play (26.2%).
  • Kayla Meneghin & Melissa Sheeran pace the Cardinal offense. Meneghin ranks 12th in the country in points per game (1.55), while Sheeran is the nation's third-leading goal scorer (1.09 gpg).
