Â
GENESEO N.Y. -- After a slow start to the 2016-17 campaign, it looks as though the Elmira College men's ice hockey team is hitting its stride. The Soaring Eagles skated to a 2-2 overtime tie on the road against No. 6/7 nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo tonight to improve to 4-1-1 in their last six games. Senior netminder
Sal Magliocco '17 turned away a season-high 44 shots, 17 of which came in the third period alone.
Â
Despite 24 shots between Elmira and Geneseo in the opening period, neither team was able to break through for the score. However, the goal lamp on both ends of the ice would get plenty of work in the second stanza, as all four tallies were scored in a 7:04 stretch.
Â
Geneseo's Andrew Romano opened the scoring at the 7:42 mark on an assist from rookie Conlan Keenan. The Soaring Eagles found the equalizer just 1:34 later on an even-strength tally from rookie
Spencer MacLean '20.
Andrew Pucci '20 and
Blake O'Neill '19 were credited with assists on MacLean's game-tying goal.
Â
Tonight's tie did not stand for long though, as Elmira's hot play continued with a goal from
Harry Kramer '20 at the 13:04 mark. Pucci picked up his second assist of the night on the goal, while
Mitch Atkins '19 was also credited with a helper on the go-ahead goal.
Â
The wild back-and-forth affair continued with another Geneseo tally, this one coming just 41 seconds later from the blade of Keenan, his second point of the night. Derek Stahl picked up an assist on the Keenan goal, which closed out the period's scoring.
Â
Geneseo upped the pressure in the third period, outshooting Elmira 17-to-5. Thankfully, Magliocco stopped each and every attempt from the Knights to force an overtime session. Elmira's defensive efforts in the period were highlighted by the team's penalty kill unit, which denied Geneseo on three extra-skater opportunities, including a 5-on-3 power play that last for 1:35 during the opening half of the final frame.
Â
In the overtime period, Elmira placed two shots on goal, while Geneseo took three. Neither team was able to find the game winner, as the Soaring Eagles skated away with a 2-2 overtime draw.
Â
Turning Point
Elmira's superb play on defense and on the penalty kill in the third period were key in tonight's draw. EC's penalty killers denied the Knights on all three of their power-play opportunities, including a 5-on-3 chance that lasted 1:35. Aiding EC's defensive efforts were Magliocco, who stopped 17 third-period shots.
