Women’s Ice Hockey Clashes with Buffalo State in ECAC West Semifinal

ELMIRA, N.Y. --
 After earning a quarterfinal-round bye in the ECAC West Conference Tournament, the second-seeded Elmira College women's ice hockey team will host third-seeded Buffalo State in the semifinal round this Sunday, March 26. The puck is set to drop at 3:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.
 
WEEKEND OVERVIEW              
  • The No. 4/5 Soaring Eagles ended the regular season strong with two wins over SUNY Potsdam and head into today's ECAC West Semifinal against Buffalo State with aspirations of reaching their fourth title game in the past five years.
  • Elmira is seeded second in this year's tournament, and as a result, received a bye into the semifinal round.
  • Elmira owns an 18-8-0 all-time ECAC West Tournament record and leads the league with seven tournament titles. EC's last ECAC West Championship dates back to the 2009-10 season.
  • The Bengals are seeded third in the ECAC West Tournament and are fresh off of a 4-0 shutout of SUNY Potsdam in the quarterfinal round last Thursday night.  
  • Buffalo State's win over Potsdam marked the first-ever postseason win in the program's 18-year history. The Bengals are 1-6-0 all-time in ECAC West Tournament games.
  • Buffalo State is making its first semifinal round appearance since the 2003 tournament, one that saw the Soaring Eagles trounce the Bengals by a 4-0 final score.
  • Elmira and Buffalo State have met three times in the ECAC West playoffs. The Soaring Eagles won the previous matchups, two of which were decided by one goal.
 
PLAYOFF HOCKEY AT THE MAC
  • Elmira is hosting its first postseason game at the Murray Athletic Center since the 2014-15 season.
  • The Soaring Eagles have hosted 13 ECAC West playoff games at the MAC since the 2001-02 season.
  • Elmira owns a 10-3-0 all-time ECAC West Tournament record at the MAC.
  • Three of Elmira's home tournament losses have occurred in the last six seasons. EC lost in the quarterfinal round in 2011 and 2012 to Utica and Potsdam, respectively. The Soaring Eagles also fell in the title game to Plattsburgh in 2015.  
  • Elmira has never lost on its home ice in the conference tournament semifinal round (5-0-0). The Soaring Eagles have outscored their opponents in those five games, 26-9.
  • EC's last home semifinal win came against Utica, 6-3, in 2015.
 
BUFFALO STATE AT A GLANCE
  • Buffalo State is 17-7-2 on the season, following a 4-0 shutout victory against Potsdam in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC West Tournament.
  • The 17 wins by the Bengals this season are the second-most in program history.  It also marked their third consecutive season with double-digit wins.
  • Buffalo State has amassed 80 goals during the 2016-17 campaign, which is a new program record for the Bengals. The previous high was 75 goals in the 2001-02 season.
  • Erin Gehen leads the Bengals with 29 points on a team-high 18 goals and 11 assists.
  • Gehen is sitting on 77 career points, just two shy of moving into a two-way tie as Buffalo State's all-time leading point scorer.
  • Rachel Lenard is the team's assist leader with 13. She is also Buffalo State's top power-play goal scorer with six extra-skater tallies, a mark that is tied for sixth in the country.
  • Justine Silva, a former ECAC West Co-Defensive Player of the Year, sports a 16-7-2 record to go along with a 1.70 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.
