BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Bengals of Buffalo State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as they defeated the Elmira College women's lacrosse team 17-7 in a non-conference matchup played on D'Youville College's Dobson Field on Saturday.
The Bengals never trailed, and scored twice inside the opening minute of play to set an early tone. Christina Krowel tallied 41 seconds into the game and again 18 seconds later, as part of a 3-0 run to start the first half.
Although down 5-1, the Soaring Eagles battled back to reduce the deficit to two goals. Rookies
Rachael Goetz '20 and
Kiana Melvin '20 netted goals at 14:08 and 13:01, respectively, to make it a 5-3 game.
After the Bengals scored four of the final five goals in the half to take a 9-4 lead at the break, the Soaring Eagles once again clawed their way back to come within two goals at the start of the second half. Juniors
Kyra McDonald '18 and
Sarah Hughson '18, and second-year attacker
Hayley Baker '19 strung together three unanswered goals, the latter coming with exactly 23 minutes remaining in regulation.
That would be all of the goal scoring for Elmira on the afternoon, however, as the Bengals ended the game with eight straight goals to cruise to a lopsided victory.
Turning Point
The Purple and Gold roared out of the locker room with three consecutive goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to reduce a five-goal deficit to just two goals, 9-7. Similar to the start of the contest, the Bengals netted two tallies of their own in less than a minute, effectively ending any comeback chances for EC. Buffalo State needed a mere 16 seconds to score their 10th goal, and another 43 seconds for their 11th, both of which came after draw control victories from Cassie Saint-Vil.
