ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball team dropped both games of an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader for the second day in a row, falling to Nazareth College by a final score of 9-1 in the opening game and 10-1 in the latter contest on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York.
In the first tilt, the Golden Flyers took an early lead over EC, plating six runners in the bottom of the second inning, all of which were scored with two outs. Naz's Rachel Mertens started the run with a single off of the Soaring Eagles' starting pitcher
Katie McDougal '18. The Golden Flyers added five more before an EC pitching change stemmed the Nazareth push.
Nazareth added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the third, following a Delaney St. George home run.
The Soaring Eagles were held scoreless until the fourth inning when
Emily Clark '19 launched her first homer of the season. Unfortunately for EC, this would be the last run of the contest, as it took the 9-1 E8 loss.
The second game of the twin bill started much more promisingly for Elmira. In the top of the first,
Emily Carlin '17 drove home
Maddy Johnson '19 with a one-out single to center field. The Soaring Eagles had an opportunity to drive in a few more runs with the bases loaded and two outs, but a
Rachel Katzenberger '19 groundout to the shortstop left three on base.
From that point, EC's starter Carlin, held the Golden Flyers to just one run for the next four innings, keeping the Purple and Gold in contention. Despite the strong pitching effort, Elmira's offense was unable to give Carlin any run support, as her RBI stood as EC's lone score of the game.
The fifth inning was where the Golden Flyers took control of the contest, as they poured in nine runs in the bottom of the inning. The massive push in the fifth was capped off by a St. George bomb that ended the contest in five innings.
