ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball team squared off with the Bombers of Ithaca College, who sit atop the Empire 8 Conference standings, at IC's Kostrinsky Field in Ithaca, New York, this afternoon. Elmira suffered an 8-0 loss in six innings in game one, before the Bombers clipped the Soaring Eagles by a 9-2 final score in the nightcap.
Â
After a scoreless first and top-half of the second inning, the Ithaca offense erupted for six runs to take a commanding lead. The six-run inning began with an Elmira fielding error, which set the table for a big inning for the Bombers.
Â
EC kept the Bombers' bats quiet over the next two innings but insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, along with six scoreless innings for the Soaring Eagle offense, handed Ithaca an 8-0 shutout win in six innings.
Â
Game two turned out to be much of the same for Elmira, as the Soaring Eagles surrendered three runs in the first two innings and another six in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Bombers an insurmountable 9-0 lead. EC attempted a comeback in the top of the fifth inning, starting with a lead-off solo home run by
Emily Carlin '17, her first homer of the 2017 season.
Carolyn Corcoran '19 delivered a two-out RBI single later in the inning, which scored
Sarah Garner '20, who reached safely on a throwing error by the Bombers earlier in the frame.
Â
Unfortunately for the Purple and Gold, they would go down in order, 1-2-3, over the next two innings, ending EC's comeback hopes and handing Ithaca a doubleheader sweep.
