ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball team dropped a pair of Empire 8 Conference games to Alfred University this afternoon at Eldridge Park Stadium. Elmira fell in the opener in a six-inning shortened game, 10-2, before the Saxons blanked the Soaring Eagles in the nightcap, 12-0.
Horseheads, New York, native Liz Thompson began game one with a leadoff single for the Saxons, before stealing second and third base. While stealing third, an errant throw by Elmira's catcher sailed into the outfield, allowing Thompson to trot home for the game-opening run. Alfred tacked on three additional runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Elmira answered in the bottom half of the second inning with a pair of runs, cutting the Saxon's lead in half, 4-2.
Emily Carlin '17, the game-one starting pitcher, earned a six-pitch walk to lead off the inning, which was followed by a hot shot up the middle by
Sarah Garner '20, putting runners on first and second base. Following a batter's interference call,
Carolyn Corcoran '19 dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.
With runners in scoring position,
Hannah Lundgren '18 made good contact on the second pitch she saw and drove the ball into left field. On the play, Alfred's left fielder dropped the fly ball, which allowed Carlin and Garner to score with ease, bringing the score to 4-2.
Allie Krohn '20 and
Maddy Johnson '19 registered a pair of infield singles on the next two at bats, loading the bases for senior
Chelsea Storch '17. Unfortunately, Storch would go down looking, as Kerri Keeler tallied one of her four strikeouts.
The bottom of the second inning was Elmira's most threatening one in terms of offense, as EC was held without a hit the rest of the way out. Alfred, on the other hand, went on to score six additional runs, including a four-spot in the top of the fourth, to secure a 10-2 win in six innings.
Game two of today's doubleheader looked like it had the potential to turn into a pitcher's duel, as neither team was able to score runs through the first two innings. However, Alfred scratched across at least one run over the next five innings, including a five-run seventh, to capture a 12-0 shutout win. Of the 12 runs, nine were unearned.
