ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College baseball kicks off its season-ending homestand at historic Dunn Field with a non-conference tilt against the Wildcats of the Pennsylvania College of Technology on Wednesday, May 3. First pitch between the Soaring Eagles and Wildcats is slated for 6:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: The Soaring Eagles concluded last week's slate of games with three consecutive non-conference wins, two of which came in a doubleheader sweep of Medaille College. EC topped the Mavericks 6-1 in the opener and 14-3 in the nightcap. On the mound, juniors
Nick Sampogna '18 and
Joe Kidd '18 each posted quality starts and picked up wins. Sampogna allowed one run in 6.0 innings with three strikeouts in the matinee, while Kidd gave up just one hit - a solo homer - in 5.0 innings with five strikeouts. Offensively,
Dylan Bellinger '17 drove in four of the six runs in game one with all three of his hits going for extra bases; he finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homer. In game two, Elmira tallied six runs in the first inning on just one hit, a three-run bases-clearing double off the bat of
Bryce Plante '18, as the Medaille pitching staff walked six and hit five in the game.
Hayden Rothenberg '17 was 1-for-3 and added three RBIs to go along with two runs and two stolen bases, while
Will Jenkins '18 was 1-for-2 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs in the late game.
ONE HIT WONDER: The Elmira men established a new program record for fewest hits allowed in a single game on April 27 against Alfred State, as the Soaring Eagles limited the Pioneers to just one hit in a 4-2 victory at historic Dunn Field. In his second collegiate start, freshman
Scott Logue '20 allowed one run on one hit with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings en route to the win. Sophomores
Blake Phelps '19 and
Nick Cottone '19 followed with 2.0 hitless innings apiece and combined for four strikeouts out of the bullpen.
SCOUTING PENN COLLEGE: The Wildcats are second in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) standings with a 9-3 conference record, but pace the league in overall wins with a 20-10 mark. Last time out on April 30, the Wildcats split a home doubleheader against Alfred State, falling in the opener by a score of 9-8 before doubling up the Pioneers in the nightcap, 6-3. The only other common opponent Penn College shares with Elmira is Wells College, a team the Wildcats swept in NEAC action on April 1 by scores of 10-3 and 9-3 in Aurora, New York. Leading the team offensively is freshman third baseman Ben Flicker. In his first collegiate season, the 5-foot-10-inch infielder owns the team lead in several statistical categories, including average (.402), hits (42), runs (28) and slugging percentage (.608). Flicker has recorded a hit in 24 of his 28 games played, including a 15-game hit streak to start the season. On the mound, junior Max Bair paces the Wildcats with a 4-1 record and a 3.43 ERA, and has thrown complete-game victories in each of his last two starts.
SERIES HISTORY: Elmira and Penn College have split each of their first two meetings. The Purple and Gold won the most recent matchup last season in convincing fashion, as both Bellinger and Sampogna crushed home runs in an 11-2 victory at Dunn Field.
