Soaring Eagles Fall in Close Contest Against Keuka

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Elmira College baseball team traveled to Keuka Park, NY for a conference matchup against the Wolves of Keuka College on Thursday afternoon. The Soaring Eagles battled hard but dropped a close contest against Keuka College, 6-5.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
Jordan Barthel singled with one out in the first to get things started for Elmira early. Xander Canfield followed with a single to center and Connor Stone walked to load the bases up with Soaring Eagles. Sean Deaner reached on a fielder's choice, bringing Barthel across to score and give Elmira a 1-0 advantage. The Wolves threatened in the bottom of the inning, loading up the bases with two outs. Darion Rodriguez picked up a huge strikeout on the mound to get EC out of the jam. Keuka got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, putting up three runs, and taking a 3-1 advantage entering the fourth inning. The Wolves added another run in the fourth inning, pushing themselves in front 4-1. CJ Wheaton opened the fifth inning with a lead-off walk. Barthel followed up by sending a double down the right field line, bringing Wheaton across to score and cutting the deficit to 4-2. 
 
The Wolves responded, getting the run back in the bottom of the inning and extending their advantage to 5-2. Brandon Policar and Alex Dinicola started the top of the sixth with consecutive walks to put a pair of runners on base. Bobby Cavalier continued momentum by sending a triple out to center field, driving both Policar and Dinicola into score and making it a 5-4 game. Cavalier brought home the tying run for EC on a Wheaton groundball, evening up the score at five. Keuka answered by putting up a run in the sixth inning, taking the advantage back 6-5. The Wolves threatened to add insurance in the eighth with a runner on third and two outs but a strikeout by Nicholas Miller got EC out of the frame allowing no runs. The Soaring Eagles were unable to spark anything in the ninth, Keuka closing this one out, as EC dropped the contest 6-5. 
 
LEADERS
Offensively, Barthel led the way, going 3-5 at the plate with a double, while collecting one RBI and a run scored. Cavalier went 1-4 at the dish with a triple, picking up a run scored and notching two RBIs. Canfield recorded two hits in five at-bats. 

UP NEXT
The Soaring Eagles are back in action on Saturday May 2nd as they honor the senior class and host a conference doubleheader against the Gators of Russell Sage College at Holding Point Recreation Center. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
