ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College field hockey team will look to carry over the momentum from its best offensive performance of the year on Wednesday into Saturday afternoon's Empire 8 Conference match-up against the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson College. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, New York.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST
In the mid-week match-up against Oswego State, Elmira more than doubled its entire offensive output from its first four games combined by scoring four goals. Four goals are the most recorded by the Soaring Eagles since they defeated Keuka in a 4-0 shutout last September. EC's 29 shots on goal against the Lakers marked the team's highest single-game total since October 21, 2013, the day the Soaring Eagles set the program's scoring record in a 14-2 blowout of Cedar Crest.
FRESHMAN FIRST
Elmira rookie
Kelsie Aloi '21 reached a milestone in the fifth game of her debut season on Wednesday. The Moravia, New York, native registered her first collegiate goal in the second half, one that briefly gave the Soaring Eagles a 3-2 lead. Aloi is one of two freshmen on this year's roster to have tallied a goal this season, the other being
Janie Kempf '21.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON
A year after tying the program record for wins in a season by going 15-5 and reaching the Empire 8 Conference Championship for the first time since 2011, the Presidents have stumbled out of the gates with a 1-3 overall record. Washington and Jefferson's lone win thus far came in its E8 opener against Houghton, as the Presidents dispatched the Highlanders in a tight 1-0 contest. Division II Slippery Rock beat Washington and Jefferson by the same score last time out on Wednesday. Scoring has been limited through the first four games of 2017, as Rachel Buyan and Jenna Jaworski have scored the only two goals for the Presidents. However, Buyan was crowned an E8 All-Conference First Teamer a year ago, thanks to her team-leading 15 goals and 35 points. In the cage, senior Karlie Baran has played every minute so far in her senior season, this after posting a paltry 0.93 goals-against average and eight shutouts as a junior in 2016. Baran led the E8 in shutouts and ranked second in goals-against average last season, yet was somehow left off the All-Conference ballot.
SERIES HISTORY
The Soaring Eagles and Presidents have met annually since the fall of 2006, and the series has been controlled from the start by Washington and Jefferson. The Presidents have won 10 of the 11 all-time meetings, including seven in a row to open the series, and they're currently riding another three-game win streak. Elmira's only win over Washington and Jefferson came during the 2013 season, when the Soaring Eagles edged its conference foe in a 2-1 overtime bout at the Murray Athletic Center.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Soaring Eagles will spend the next two weeks away from home, as EC embarks on a season-long four-game road trip, beginning on Tuesday, September 19th, at the College at Brockport. The non-conference contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Brockport's Bob Boozer Field.
