ELMIRA, N.Y. -- After opening its four-game road trip with a 2-1 victory over the College at Brockport on Tuesday, the Elmira College field hockey team will travel to Hoboken, New Jersey, for an Empire 8 Conference matinee against Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 23. The E8 tilt is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

LAST TIME OUT
EC challenged the Golden Eagles of Brockport underneath the lights at Bob Boozer Field and came out victorious for the first time this season with a 2-1 non-conference win. The Soaring Eagles were led offensively by freshman Janie Kempf '21, who pieced together the first multi-goal game of her young career by scoring both of Elmira's goals. Her first tally came in the 28th minute to put the Purple and Gold up, 1-0, before the halftime break. The Golden Eagles responded less than four minutes into the second half to draw the game even at 1-1, but Kempf converted a penalty corner for the game-winner in the 55th minute. Atu Machika '18 and Sarah McCaffrey '18 each contributed one assist, and Julie Hockenberger '18 made six saves in goal.

KEMPF COMES THROUGH
On the field, Elmira's first-year forward Kempf is beginning to look more like a veteran and less like a rookie with each passing minute. The Cazenovia, New York, native, who helped her high school team reach back-to-back state championship games, has started all seven games this season and is the team's leading point-getter with eight. Her four goals not only pace the Purple and Gold, but are one shy of tying EC's single-season high from each of the past two seasons with 10 games remaining on the regular-season schedule.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The Ducks have controlled the all-time series in the feathered rivalry against EC. Stevens enters this weekend's match-up with 10 wins in 11 tries against the Soaring Eagles, with the lone exception coming in the first-ever meeting back on September 23, 2006. That day, Elmira bested the Ducks by a 4-2 final score at the Murray Athletic Center. When facing EC at home, Stevens boasts an unblemished 5-0 record.

SCOUTING STEVENS
The Ducks, who won the Empire 8 Tournament as recently as 2015, are off to an uncharacteristically slow start this fall. Stevens is a mere 1-5 overall entering this weekend, but its losses have come against the likes of Fairleigh Dickinson University, No. 6 The College of New Jersey, eighth-ranked Montclair State, and the reigning E8 Tournament champ, St. John Fisher College. To date, the lone common opponent between Elmira and Stevens has been Brockport, which the Ducks handled with ease in a 5-0 win. Offensively, three-time E8 All-Conference honoree Victoria Alvarez has scored at least one goal in five of the team's six games and paces the squad with seven goals. Freshman goalie Nicole Mottole has been busy between the pipes, as she recorded 17 and 19 saves, respectively, in Stevens' most recent setbacks against St. John Fisher and Cabrini University.

LOOKING AHEAD
Following Saturday's Empire 8 bout against the Ducks, Elmira will travel north on Route 13 to face former conference foe, Ithaca College, on Wednesday, September 27. The non-league contest is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
