ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's volleyball team opened the Dig Pink Invitational on the campus of SUNY Oneonta in fine fashion, toppling Baruch College in a four-set battle.
It was an all-around team effort for the Purple and Gold against the Bearcats as they held an advantage in digs, 67-57, and in aces, 14-4.
Natalie Schieder '19 finished with a double-double, posting a team-leading 11 kills to go along with 13 digs.
Taylor Kaznowski '19 recorded a match-high 33 assists, while
Kasey Campbell '19 finished the night with a match-high-tying 18 digs. Elmira cruised through the opening two sets, winning the opener by a final score of 25-14 before claiming the second set, 25-19.
EC built an 11-5 advantage in the first set with a 4-0 run punctuated by an ace from
Tiara John '19. The Soaring Eagles never looked back from there as
Savannah Terry '21 put EC up 23-13 with one of her six kills. Elmira faced little trouble from there as the Purple and Gold claimed the opener. In the second set, the Purple and Gold took a 12-8 advantage on the heels of a 4-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from Schieder. A pair of aces from Kaznowski put EC up 18-10 and it was smooth sailing from there as Elmira took a two-sets-to-none advantage.
The third set proved to be a back-and-forth affair, as Baruch battled back against the Purple and Gold. The score was tied on eight separate occasions as EC eventually grabbed a 21-18 lead after back-to-back kills from
Lauren Smith '21 and
Sam Chadbourne '18. The Bearcats seized the momentum from there however, stealing the set by a final score of 28-26.
The final set of the evening saw the teams continue to trade blows until a huge block from Terry and John put EC up 16-12. It was all Purple and Gold from there, as
Lydia Milligan '21 and Schieder combined for five kills to put Baruch away, 25-14.
