GENEVA, N.Y. -- Four unanswered goals during the heart of Saturday night's contest proved to be the difference, as the No. 6/7-ranked Hobart College Statesmen handed the Elmira College men's ice hockey team a 6-2 setback in non-league play.
It was another penalty-laden game tonight, as the two teams combined for 15 infractions and a total of 41 combined penalty minutes. EC was whistled for seven penalties and 14 minutes, while Hobart was dinged eight times for a total of 27 penalty minutes. Those infractions put Elmira on power play six times and Hobart five times. Both teams connected once with the extra skater.
Connor Powell '20 led the charge offensively for the Soaring Eagles with a pair of goals, his first two tallies of the season, one of which came on the power play.
Matthew Cuce '20 chipped in with two points, both of which came on assists, while
Anthony Parrucci '20 and
Nick Ford '20 added one assist apiece.
Gennaro Anzevino '21 got the start in net for Elmira and made 24 saves in a full 60 minutes of action between the pipes. He logged nine saves in both the first and second periods.
Hobart's Travis Schneider broke the ice with an unassisted goal at 13:15 of the first period, a tally that held up through the first intermission.
A slew of penalties in the second stanza put the Elmira power play on the ice three times in the opening 11 minutes. Elmira's Powell was able to capitalize with the extra skater at 10:45 by scoring his first goal of the season on assists from Cuce and Parucci. The goal knotted the score at 1-1.
However, three unanswered goals by the Statesmen in the final 4:33 of regulation put Hobart back in front, 4-1. Jonáš Toupal scored two of those goals, while Schneider added the other on the power play.
Mike Faulkner made it a 5-1 Hobart lead with an unassisted goal just 54 seconds into the third period, which was more than enough separation for the Statesmen to clinch the win.
Elmira put an end to Hobart's run of four-straight goals at the 4:30 mark of the third frame, as Powell tallied his second of the night on assists from Cuce, who logged his second assist of the game, and Ford.
With the game coming to a close, Hobart added an insurance goal with just 56 seconds left on the game clock, as Lawson McDougall closed out the night with his second goal of the season.
