PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- A strong first period from United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) foe Chatham proved too much for the Elmira College men's ice hockey team to overcome on Friday evening, as the Soaring Eagles could never swing the momentum back into their favor against the Cougars.
Despite doubling Chatham in shots, 44-22, Elmira struggled to beat Chatham's netminder Ricardo Gonzalez, who mustered 43 saves over 60 minutes of action. Elmira was unusually quiet on the power play, as the Purple and Gold were unable to cash in on any of their four chances with the extra skater.
The Cougars struck five minutes into the opening period, as Matthew Ho was able to beat
Jake Sabourin '21. Chatham added another tally off of the stick of Eric Hildebrand with seven minutes left in the period before Michael Lamison made it a 3-0 advantage for the Cougars with as time wound down in the opening stanza.
Elmira finally broke through Chatham's defense midway through the second period.
Connor Powell '20 pulled EC back within with an individual effort as the junior rifled the puck past Gonzalez to pull the Soaring Eagles within two. The Purple and Gold continue to search for goals as the contest wore on, but Chatham stifled EC's goal scorers. The Cougars added a pair of goals via Lamison in the third, who finished the game with a hat trick.
