Baseball Ends Season-Opening Road Trip With Loss at Guilford

Score: Guilford College 7, Elmira College 1
Records: Guilford (2-4), Elmira (0-5)
Location: Greensboro, N.C. -- Edgar McBane Field

GREENSBORO, N.C. --
The Elmira College baseball team dropped to 0-5 on its season-opening road trip following a 7-1 loss to the Quakers of Guilford College at Edgar McBane Field in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Quakers outhit the Soaring Eagles 14-to-5, with the bulk of Guilford's damage coming from their second and third hitters in the lineup. Combined Rocco Wilcox and Mitchell Stumpo finished 6-for-9 with five runs and four RBIs for the hosts, providing more than enough offense needed to win Friday's non-conference ballgame.

On the other hand, the Soaring Eagles left six men on base and although the first four hitters in the lineup each collected one hit, EC was unable to find a spark to ignite a rally. In the third inning, for example, Sam Plaugher '20 followed up a Bryce Plante '18 single with a double down the right-field line to put a pair of runners in scoring position. However, Tommy Fogarty '20 hit a line drive to the shortstop in the next at-bat, who was able to turn two before Plaugher could tag up.

Elmira's lone run came in the top of the sixth. Down 4-0, Fogarty reached base on an infield single, took second on a passed ball and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from classmate Jansen Crossley '20.

Wilcox and Stumpo responded hitting a pair of run-scoring doubles in the bottom of the sixth to pad Guilford's cushion to the final score, 7-1.

Making just the second start of his collegiate career against the Quakers was junior right-hander Nick Cottone '19. The Toms River, New Jersey, native allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5.0 innings and struck out four.

Although southpaw Anthony Colegrove '18 was taxed for three runs as the first man out of the bullpen, Blake Phelps '19 and Taber Carter '21 finished the game with scoreless appearances. In his 2018 debut, Phelps hurled 1.2 one-hit innings, while Carter notched two strikeouts in an inning of relief.

News and Notes
  • Elmira dropped to 0-5 during its southern road trip.
  • One run scored marked a season-low for the Soaring Eagles.
  • Thanks to Joey Florio '20 swipe of third base, EC continued its streak with a stolen base in every game so far in 2018.
  • Dennis Rudolph '18 reached base safely for the fifth consecutive game with a walk vs. Guilford.
  • Conor Bawiec '18 extended his on-base streak to 33 straight games dating back to his junior season.
  • Cottone's start was his first since April 16, 2016, against Houghton College, and his 5.0 innings marked the longest outing of his career.
  • Carter logged the first two strikeouts of his collegiate career in his second game out of the bullpen.
