NEW YORK -- The No. 15-ranked Elmira College men's volleyball team suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of ninth-ranked New York University today in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility in New York City.

The Violets were able to come out on top in today's contest with solid hitting. NYU maintained a .467 hitting percentage for the match, while Elmira posted a .254 attacking clip. The Violets also held advantages in aces (14-to-2) and blocks (7-to-2).

Ryan McDonough '19 led the way for the Soaring Eagles with nine kills on a .350 hitting percentage. Jose Malave '21 was next on the Purple and Gold with eight kills and a .333 attack percentage. Setter Jeremy Best '19 assisted on 23 of EC's 28 kills in the match.

The first set went very much in NYU's favor, as it started the frame on a 7-2 run. This control was maintained for much of the set, as the Violets held on to take a 25-13 win to go ahead 1-0.

In the second set, EC and NYU traded points to start, before a 4-0 Violets run gave the home team a 10-7 lead. Elmira answered by taking seven of the next eight points to storm ahead 14-11. A 4-0 push by the Violets a few moments later, knotted the score at 20-all. NYU was able to seal the second with a 4-1 surge to end the frame, taking a 25-23 triumph.

Similarly to the opening set, the Violets were able to storm ahead by starting the frame on a 7-2 run. Elmira responded by cutting the deficit to two points, 17-15, later in the set. It was at that moment, however, that a 6-0 push by NYU proved to be too much for EC to handle, as NYU went on to win the third, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

In Their Own Words…
Head Coach Daniel Miranda shares his thoughts on today's tough loss against nationally-ranked NYU…
"Tough loss with too many unforced errors. The boys swung well as a credit to Jeremy Best's decision making. Tough for us to keep the swings rolling through without passing the ball first."
