ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team will battle both Hiram College and Baruch College at the St. John Fisher College Invitational on Saturday, March 17, in Rochester, New York. The Soaring Eagles begin the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. bout against the Terriers, before concluding play at 3:00 p.m. against the Bearcats.

LAST TIME OUT
EC was swept at a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) tri-match, hosted by New York University on Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11. In the first match on Saturday, Elmira was bested by No. 8 NYU, 3-0, on its home court of the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. The following morning, the Soaring Eagles went four sets against No. 2-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology, falling by a 3-1 final score. Ryan McDonough '19 led the way for the Purple and Gold with 20 kills in the two matches while maintaining a .302 hitting percentage. Jose Malave '21 was next on the team with 13 kills to go along with a team-best 10 digs. Landon Miller '20 tallied 11 kills on the weekend, in addition to posting a career-high three solo blocks against the Ducks. Jeremy Best '19 finished the event with 58 assists to give him 842 this season, the most in the UVC.

RELIABLE RYAN
McDonough has been on a hot streak of late, as he has tallied double-digit kills in four of the last five matches, which doubled his season total to eight. The Lindenhurst, New York, native has led the team in kills in three of the last four contests. In addition to generating kills, McDonough has been efficient with his swings, as he has hit above .250 three times in that span. The highlight of the third-year outside hitter's effective streak came in EC's 3-1 win over D'Youville College on March 3, when he hit at a .394 clip on 33 attacks with a season-high-tying 19 kills. McDonough has also been critical to Elmira's defensive success, as he leads the team with 139 digs this season

SCOUTING HIRAM

After beginning their first varsity season with three consecutive wins, the Terriers have lost 17 of their last 18 contest and are 4-17 on the season. Don't let its record fool you, however, this team plays hard and is a threat to anyone, as shown in their five-set loss to the Soaring Eagles on February 24. In their most recent contest on March 13, Hiram suffered a 3-1 defeat to Thiel College in road action in Greenville, Pennsylvania. Freshman Alex Andrzejewski has been the team's best offensive threat, as he has floored a team-high 203 kills and has tallied 14 services aces, which are second on the Terriers. Fellow rookie Cory Fischer is an all-around performer, as he leads Hiram with 124 digs and is second in kills with 163.

SCOUTING BARUCH
After defeating the Soaring Eagles in the 2018 season-opener on January 19, the Bearcats' campaign has been inconsistent. Baruch went 8-10 since that contest, with six of those victories coming in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, where it is a perfect 6-0. Outside of league play, the Bearcats have challenged themselves with bouts against then-ranked No. 1 Springfield (twice), No. 3 Stevens and No. 6 NYU, all four of which resulted in straight-set losses. Baruch is led this season by sophomore Nicholas Godino, who has posted a team-leading 173 kills and ranks fifth in the conference in kills per set (2.75). Sophomore Junior Kyriakos Semertzidis commands the defense with a team-leading 2.32 digs per set, fifth-highest in the CUNYAC.

UP NEXT
The Soaring Eagles head to their final road UVC tri-match of the season on Saturday and Sunday, March 24-25, on the campus of St. John Fisher. Elmira will battle the first-year Cardinals on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., before squaring off against long-time rival Nazareth College at 1:00 p.m. the following afternoon.
