ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team was defeated 19-4 in an Empire 8 Conference contest against Utica College on Saturday at Ernie Davis Academy. For the Soaring Eagles, the loss is the second in a row after opening E8 play with a big win over Alfred University last weekend.
The Pioneers outshot Elmira 40-to-14 overall and finished the matchup with advantages in ground balls (27-to-18) and draw controls (15-to-9). Utica scored 14 times in the opening half, which included the first goal of the afternoon by Hailee DuMont just 59 seconds into the game.
Rachael Goetz '20 was one of EC's four goal scorers, as her tally came at the 23:56 mark of the first half.
Danielle Goddard '20 deposited her only goal of the day into the back of the net at the 17:00 mark, which brought Elmira within four goals, 6-2.
Rachel Grampp '18 tallied once in the first half, too, but Utica rattled off seven unanswered goals that bridged both halves and allowed the Pioneers to take a commanding 17-3 advantage.
Sarah Hughson '18 also netted a goal for the Soaring Eagles late in the second.
Of EC's five point-getters, the only Grampp was able to register multiple with one goal and one helper.
Kelcey Crawford '18 collected a team-leading four draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. In goal, freshman
Kacie Pierce '21 made 12 saves, just two shy of her single-game season high.
