Women's Tennis Battles Sage in Empire 8 Action at the MAC

PINE VALLEY, N.Y -- The Elmira College women's tennis team was defeated by a 7-2 final score in Empire 8 Conference action against The Sage Colleges on Saturday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center. The Soaring Eagles earned two wins at third doubles and sixth singles, while two other matches were decided in tie-break sets.

The Gators took a 2-1 lead in the match with a pair of victories at the top two doubles positions. At No. 1, Elmira's Cassie Brown '21 and Katy Jewett '21 put up a tremendous fight, but with the score level at 7-all, Sage's Abbey Clobridge and Sadie Dunne pulled through for a 7-1 triumph in the tiebreaker.

At third doubles, Cheyanne Holwell '19 and Marta Kliszcz '20 teamed up for the third time this season, earning their first win as a tandem. Holwell and Kliszcz topped Gators Alison Trudo and Molly Cochran with ease in an 8-3 decision.

Although Sage was victorious in five of the six singles matches, Sarah Hill '19 and Kliszcz battled at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Down 1-0 in the match, Hill handed Clobridge a 7-5 defeat in the second set, but the Gators' top singles player edged the EC senior in the third set, 6-1. Kliszcz, on the other hand, evened her fifth singles match a 1-1 with a 6-2 triumph in the second set, before falling 10-7 in a super tiebreaker.

For the second time in 2018-19, Jewett logged a win at No. 6 singles. The Upper Nyack, New York, native improved to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 against Empire 8 opponents by downing Regina Marchese in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
