OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A shorthanded Elmira College women's tennis team fell in its season-opener this afternoon, as the Lakers of Oswego State handed the Soaring Eagles a 9-0 setback. Today's contest began outside on Oswego's hard courts, but rain in the region forced play to move inside to the Romney Tennis Courts.

Elmira made the trek to Central New York with four players, which put the Purple and Gold in an early 3-0 hole, as EC was forced to forfeit matches at third doubles, fifth singles and sixth singles.

The Lakers of Oswego clinched the victory this afternoon by claiming doubles matches at the first and second positions, surrendering just one game in the process. Singles action looked similar, as Oswego picked up straight-set wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 4.

The most competitive match of the day took place at the top singles position, where EC's Cassie Brown '21 battled Bridget Bender in two close sets. After dropping the opening set at 6-2, Brown rallied in the second set and pushed Bender to the brink. However, Bender eventually prevailed with a late break of serve to clinch the match, 6-2, 7-5.
