ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 setback against the unbeaten Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference match on Friday evening at Oneonta's Dr. Heissan Tennis Courts.

Despite forfeiting matches at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, the shorthanded Soaring Eagles became just the second team in seven tries to take a point from the Red Dragons, who improved to 7-0 this fall. 

After falling 8-2 with Cassie Brown '21 in the top doubles match, Katy Jewett '21 extended her singles win streak to five in a row. Jewett topped Gianna Papini in a hard-fought match at the No. 4 position, overcoming a loss in the first set with a 6-2 triumph in the second stanza and an 11-9 win in a super tiebreaker. The sophomore from Upper Nyack, New York, is now 5-0 as a singles player in her second season, while Friday's match in the fourth slot represents the highest she's played in the lineup in her career. 

Although the remaining singles matches all went to SUNY Oneonta in straight sets, senior Cheyanne Holwell '19 contended in the third slot. She took five games from Amelia Wilson in a 6-3, 6-2, loss. At the top spot, Sarah Hill '19 battled Michelle Halpern and took three games in the first set, but was unable to overcome the deficit in a straight-set loss, 6-3, 6-0.
