PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- A three-goal second period by the Elmira College men's ice hockey team was the key factor in Saturday night's United Collegiate Hockey Confrence (UCHC) bout with Neumann, as the Soaring Eagles powered through for a 3-2 league victory at the Murray Athletic Center. The one-goal victory helped the Purple and Gold move into sole possession of second place in the UCHC standings with 28 conference points.
A total of eight players finished with a point tonight for the Elmira men.
Adam Eby '21,
Marty Kapoian '22 and
Connor Powell '20 all found the back of the net once for the Soaring Eagles, while
Spencer Carter '20,
Nick Ford '20,
Nick Grinvalds '22,
Spencer MacLean '20 and
Chris Moses '19 all picked up one assist apiece.
Powell's goal went down as tonight's game-winner, while Eby's tally was the first of his two-year career.
In goal,
Jake Sabourin '21 had another banner night for the Soaring Eagles. The Catonsville, Maryland, native made 25 saves, including a 12-save second-period performance, en route to his fourth win in his last five starts.
Elmira held a hefty advantage in shots on goal in the first period, 19-7, but could not break past the efforts of Neumann's Mike Consentino for a goal. EC had a plethora of quality scoring chances, including several from just outside the crease, but Consentino came up with 19 stops to send the teams into the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
All of EC's offense came in a nine-minute stretch in the second stanza, as EC took a commanding 3-0 lead. Eby opened the scoring at 8:24 on a low-lining shot from the left point that beat a screened Cosentino. Carter and Moses were credited with assists on the game-opening goal.
Kapoian notched his seventh tally of the season at the 12:38 mark to make it a 2-0 Elmira lead. The rookie collected a loose puck in front of the Neumann cage and buried a wrist shot in a scrum. Grinvalds and MacLean picked up assists on the tally.
Nearly five minutes passed until Powell increased the EC lead to three goals by scoring his team-leading 16th of the season. After winning a faceoff battle, Ford carried the puck into the slot and fired a shot on target and the rebound leaked out to Powell, who one-timed it into the open net for the insurance tally.
Neumann came roaring back in the third frame by scoring back-to-back power-play goals in a 1:20 span, cutting the Elmira lead to just one, 3-2. Joe Mitchell scored first at 5:52 and was followed by Mario Tropea's tally at 7:12.
The Knights of Neumann pulled Cosentino from net for the final 1:31 of regulation, but the extra attacker did not pay off, as Elmira held them scoreless to secure the 3-2 victory.
In His Own Words…

"We knew what was on the line tonight and the played hard from the start. We could feel that we were going to score in the second period and we knew it was just a matter of time. Sabourin was great all weekend and you could see his confidence improving each period this weekend."
