Women’s Soccer Suffers One-Goal Setback to SUNY Cobleskill

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's soccer team held a two-goal lead with less than 15 minutes to play in regulation, but a fiery comeback effort by SUNY Cobleskill down the stretch handed EC a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.

The Soaring Eagles (2-7-0) held a slim lead in shots, 22-21, over the Tigers (2-7-1). However, the shots on goal total finished in favor of SUNY Cobleskill, 17-14, as did corner-kick opportunities, 5-4.

Elmira took the first lead of the game in the 40th minute behind a game-opening goal from senior Jennifer Flynn '20. Flynn, who tallied her first of the season, scored off of a deflection from 12-yards out to send the Purple and Gold into the halftime break with a one-goal lead.

Nicole Hanselman '20 doubled Elmira's lead in the 62nd minute, as she found the back of the net for a second time this season. A through ball from Taylor Hanson '21 into the box allowed Hanselman to beat Cobleskill netminder, Abigail Wetsel, for the goal.

It looked as though Elmira was on track to secure its third win of the year, but a fierce comeback by the Tigers in the closing 15 minutes of regulation uprooted EC's hopes of a victory.

The rally started with Julia Howard, who scored from 18-yards out in the 76th minute. Then, less than two minutes later, Chloe Antalek produced the equalizer on a free kick from 22-yards out.

The final blow came from the boot of Ana Post in the 83rd minute, as Rebecca Bruno slipped a pass to Post inside the 18-yard box, setting her up for the game-winning score.
