Men's Lacrosse Outmatched By Hilbert Under the Lights on Monday

Score: Hilbert College 14, Elmira College 5
Records: Elmira (0-3), Hilbert (1-1)
Location: Notre Dame High School -- Elmira, N.Y.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's lacrosse team was unable to ground the Hawks of Hilbert College, as the visitors pulled away late to secure a 14-5 non-conference victory over the Soaring Eagles at Notre Dame High School's turf field.

Although trailing, EC remained within striking distance for most of the first three quarters. However, Hilbert punctuated its first win of the year by scoring half of their 14 goals in the final period.

The Soaring Eagles received two goals from first-year talent Sam Shaw '22, who was one of three Elmira players to record multiple points. Midfielders David Keisler '20 (1g-1a) and James Mayer '20 (1g-1a) both finished with two points, while John Broyles '19 (1g), Kenny Powell '19 (1a) and Isaac Gottheil '22 (1a) each logged one point. Hilbert, on the other hand, was led offensively by Edward Mathias (3g-5a), Drew Warner (3g-2a), James Duffy (1g-4a) and Brandon Bitka (3g).

Hilbert scored the game's first four goals, but the Purple and Gold got on the scoreboard with five seconds remaining in the opening quarter, when Broyles deflected the ball into the back of the net for his first career goal. Stout defense on both sides of the field limited each team to just one score in the second quarter. Powell connected with Keisler with 2:34 left in the first half to bring Elmira with three, 5-2.

The Soaring Eagles opened the scoring in the second half to whittle the deficit down to two goals, as Shaw buried a man-up goal with an assist from Mayer. Hilbert responded mightily, as the Hawks went on to tally nine of the next 10 goals, four of which were man-up. Down 14-4 inside the last minute, Mayer was able to deposit his first career goal on a man-up situation to bring the score to its final.

Hilbert finished the night with advantages in shots (55-to-29), ground balls (54-to-41), and faceoff wins (17-to-5). Out of the backend, Austin Spiridilozzi '20 and Cam Brickey '19 paced the Soaring Eagles with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers apiece. In goal, Jacob Mattice '21, the reigning Empire 8 Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, produced 16 saves in 53:46 minutes of action.
