ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Sophomore goalkeeper
Jacob Mattice '21 made a career-high 26 saves, but it wasn't enough for the Elmira College men's lacrosse team in Wednesday night's 23-4 Empire 8 Conference loss to Hartwick College.
Mattice racked up 19 saves by halftime and added seven more in the second half, as he faced a barrage of shots from the Hartwick offense, which accumulated a total of 64 shots in the contest. The Canton, New York, native made numerous point-blank stops and also caused a pair of turnovers to go along with a team-high nine ground balls.
Despite Mattice's impressive performance, the Hawks' persistent attack allowed the visitors to pull ahead 14-0 by halftime.
John Broyles '19 ended Hartwick's run of unanswered goals with his second of the year, a man-up tally at 11:58 of the third quarter. On the play,
Spencer MacLean '20 was credited with an assist, the first of his team-best two points on the night.
EC ended the bout with three consecutive goals late in the fourth quarter, one each from
Sam Shaw '22, MacLean, and
David Keisler '20. While Shaw and MacLean did so unassisted,
Matt Marchal '19 collected his first career point with a helper on Keisler's goal inside the final minute of regulation.
