ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College Director of Athletics
Renee Carlineo has announced the appointment of
John Maio as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, as well as a partnership with the area's premier fitness center,
New York Sport & Fitness. Maio will provide Elmira's varsity programs with on-site training at both New York Sport & Fitness locations in downtown Elmira and Horseheads, New York.
"I'm thrilled to add John to our team within the athletics department," said Carlineo. "John's experience and passion will greatly benefit our student-athletes and athletics programs."
Maio, who is the owner, founder and head trainer of New York Sport & Fitness, becomes the first-ever Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in the College's storied history. Maio comes to Elmira with a wealth of knowledge and experience that ranges from his time as a high school strength and conditioning coach to working individually with college-bound athletes to prepare them for the rigors collegiate athletics.
"I would like to thank Renee and Elmira College for the opportunity to serve as the College's Strength and Conditioning Coach," said Maio. "I'm excited to begin working with the student-athletes and help grow the athletic programs."
His professional career began as a Fitness Trainer at Club Nautilus in 2000, where he stayed for four years. Maio's coaching career started in 2003 at Elmira Notre Dame High School as the Varsity Assistant Football Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach.
In 2005, Maio began his journey in the business world by opening New York Sport & Fitness, located in the heart of downtown Elmira at 134 West Water Street. The overwhelmingly positive and successful nature of the business resulted in Maio opening a second location just a few short miles away from the Murray Athletic Center in Horseheads.
A graduate of Mansfield University, Maio obtained a Bachelor of Science in Health Science during his time with the Mountaineers, before acquiring a Master's in Health Education from SUNY Cortland. Maio is certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He also possesses Level 2 certifications as a Functional Strength Coach (CFSC), as well as Functional Movement Screen (FMS). Additionally, he has obtained certifications in Exercise Nutrition and Spinning Instruction.
Maio's ties to the community cannot be understated. In addition to his involvement with Notre Dame High School, Maio is a founding member of the Joel Stephens Foundation, which raises and donates thousands of dollars annually to the charity.
He resides in West Elmira with his wife, Heather, and three children, Evalynn, Roman and Rocco.
