Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 6 Vassar in UVC Action

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team was unable to keep pace with the vaunted attack of No. 6 Vassar College on Friday evening, as the Soaring Eagles fell in three sets to their United Volleyball Conference (UVC) foe on Pat Thompson '75 Court.

The Brewers (15-5, 6-1 UVC) came out with a team-centric attack that resulted in a .382 attack percentage with 41 kills and just 12 errors. Vassar's presence at the net proved difficult for the Purple and Gold as well, as the Brewers posted seven blocks.

Elmira (5-13, 1-2 UVC) found a path through Vassar's defense via rookie Tyler Anderson '23. The Bellmore, New York, native, posted a match-high 11 kills with a .500 attack percentage. Neiram Galán-Canales '23 handled the reins of Elmira's offense and finished with 23 assists.

After Vassar claimed the opening set, 25-13, the Purple and Gold responded with their best offensive performance of the evening in the second frame. EC floored nine kills and hit at a match-best .350 clip, as the Elmira men pushed the Brewers every step of the way.

The two sides traded blows throughout the early going, and Elmira eventually took a 10-to-9 lead following a kill from Matt Straney '20. EC's advantage was short-lived, however, as the Brewers erupted for five consecutive to seize a 14-to-10 advantage. The Brewers controlled the set from there to earn a 25-18 victory.

The final set got off to a similar start, as the score was tied on four separate occasions throughout the first 10 points. The Brewers' offense hit its stride after the early battle and the visitors opened a 23-16 advantage. EC threatened late. As the Soaring Eagles capped a 3-to-0 run with a kill from Declan Quinn '22 to pull within four, 23-19. It was too little, too late, however, as Vassar held out to take the set, 25-20.
