Men's Ice Hockey Drops #15 UMass Boston on Saturday Evening

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – The Elmira College Men's Ice Hockey team won back-to-back NEHC games this weekend and capped it off with a 5-2 come from behind victory over the #15 ranked Beacons from UMass Boston. After the Beacons took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, the Soaring Eagles went for five straight to close out the game and stay undefeated this season at the Murray Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Elmira faced an early deficit after Ethan Nitkin (9:30) and Jake Adkins (13:09) gave the Beacons a 2-0 lead headed into the first intermission. Despite outshooting UMass Boston 16-5 in the opening period, the Soaring Eagles were unable to find the scoreboard.
 
In the second period, Elmira's leading point scorer Janis Vizbelis '24 got the Soaring Eagles on the board with assists from Bailey Krawczyk '24 and Jordan Gonzalez '24 with under six minutes remaining in the period. After back-and-forth hockey, the Soaring Eagles tied the contest at the buzzer as Mathieu Gervais '23 put one past UMB goalkeeper Connor McAnanama. After nearly five minutes of discussion amongst the officials, the goal stood and EC went into the final break with the score even.
 
In the third, Elmira wasted no time taking the lead for the first time as Shawn Kennedy '24 scored on assists from Krawczyk and Mitch Haight '24just 1:24 into the period. From there, the Soaring Eagles didn't look back, as Jared Smith '24 and Chance Gorman '24 scored goals in the 11th and 16th minutes, respectively, to give EC a 5-2 victory.
 
Chris Janzen '21 finished the night with 33 saves in net, and 30 consecutive saves after allowing two of his first three shots faced to find the back of the twine.

Elmira will be back in action on Wednesday against the Bengals from Buffalo State. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM in Buffalo, New York.
