AMHERST, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team opened the spring season on Friday night with a 3-0 loss on the road against the Daemen College Wildcats inside the Lumsden Gymnasium in Amherst, New York.
The Soaring Eagles (0-1) faced a tall task in their first match in nearly a year. Daemen (2-0), a Division II institution in all other sports, competes in the NCAA's National Collegiate division for men's volleyball, which is comprised entirely of D-I and D-II programs.
EC looked its best in the first set, as the Soaring Eagles recorded nine of their 14 kills and hit .148 in the opening set against the Wildcats. Defensively, Elmira limited Daemen to a .192 attack percentage in the first, well below its match average of .339.
Newcomer
Oscar Muñoz Trinidad '23 performed well in his first match as a Soaring Eagle. Muñoz Trinidad paced the team in kills (7), aces (3), and blocks (2), to go along with a pair of digs.
Eric Jackson '23 floored four kills with just one error, resulting in a team-high .273 attack percentage. Jackson and
Alex Adelman '22 were each responsible for four digs apiece as well.
News and Notes
- Elmira fell to 0-1 to start the 2021 season, while Daemen improved to 2-0.
- EC matched Daemen with nine kills in the first set, and nearly equaled the Wildcats' hitting percentage (.148-to-.192).
- The Soaring Eagles had two total blocks, just one shy of the Wildcats in the match.
- Muñoz Trinidad did a little bit of everything in his debut match, leading the team in kills (7), aces (3), and blocks (2).
- Jordan Peiser '24 also appeared in his first collegiate match, finishing with one dig and one block assist.
- Setter Neiram Galán-Canales '23 earned all 13 assists for EC.
