Nationally-Ranked Vassar Too Much for Men’s Volleyball

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's volleyball team faced another tough challenge this afternoon as the Soaring Eagles (0-10, 0-3 UVC) suffered a pair of 3-0 losses to No. 4 nationally-ranked Vassar College (2-0, 1-0 UVC).
 
#4 Vassar 3, Elmira 0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-13)
The fourth-ranked Brewers flexed their muscle in the opening match, surrendering just 42 points across three sets to secure a conference victory.
 
Elmira pushed Vassar in the second set but ultimately fell, 25-19. The Soaring Eagles led by as many as three points, 19-16, thanks to a 5-0 run. During that stretch, Oscar Muñoz Trinidad '23 logged two kills, while Ryan Mattes '23 recorded one. Additionally, Eric Jackson '23 tossed in a pair of service aces.
 
However, from that point on, the Brewers closed out the set with nine consecutive points to clinch it.
 
Muñoz Trinidad led the Elmira offense with five kills. He also added five assists and a team-high six digs. Mattes finished with three kills and three blocks, while rookie Jordan Peiser '24 chipped in four kills.
 
Neiram Galán-Canales '23 played as Elmira's primary setter this afternoon and finished with a team-high 10 assists.
 
#4 Vassar 3, Elmira 0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-23)
It was much closer affair in the second match of today's doubleheader, but the result remained the same, as Vassar marched away with a three-set victory.
 
Elmira led for a good chunk of the second set, but a 6-1 run from the Brewers late in the set gave the home team a 21-17 lead that Vassar would not relinquish as it won the set, 25-23.
 
In the third set, EC held a two-point lead as late as 21-19, and clung to a one-point lead at 22-21, but the Brewers won four of the next five points to clinch the set, 25-23.
 
Muñoz Trinidad paced the Purple and Gold with a team-high 13 kills, which also tied for the match high. The Dominican Republic native connected at a 37.5% clip (13k-4e-24ta).
 
Galán-Canales orchestrated the offense with 14 assists, while Alex Adelman '22 held things down on the defensive side of things with 10 digs.
