HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team won its second consecutive game on Wednesday night, as the Soaring Eagles nearly doubled Houghton College for a 13-7 victory at the Highlanders' Burke Field.
Elmira, which improved to 3-1 overall, has outscored its last two opponents by a combined 30-10. Additionally, Soaring Eagles have opened a season with wins in three of their first four games for the first time since starting the 2012 campaign with a 6-1 record.
In the attacking third of the field, the duo of
Kendra Heath '23 and
Emily Ferguson '24 once again set the tone for the Purple and Gold. Heath, a Corning, New York, native, recorded a game-high six points with four goals and two assists. Ferguson, a product of Waterloo, New York, extended her remarkable streak of five-goal performances, leading all goal scorers with five tallies.
In the midfield,
Kari Jensen '23 did a little bit of everything. Another Waterloo High School graduate, Jensen contributed two goals, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and a game-best five draw controls.
EC also received points from
Catrina Dinehart '23 (1g-1a),
Mikayla Carfello '22 (1g), and
Maura May '24 (1a).
Collecting her third win of the spring between the posts was second-year netminder
Alex Cox '23. In the first 43:39, Cox helped Elmira build a seven-goal lead despite the Highlanders (0-1) finishing the matchup with a 21-to-19 advantage in shots on goal. The goalie from Penn Yan, New York, made a season-high 12 saves before
Krystyna Lilland '21 entered in relief.

- At 3-1, Elmira is off to its best start since opening the 2012 season with a 6-1 record.
- Wednesday's win over Houghton is EC's first since 2016, snapping a three-game losing streak versus the Highlanders.
- 13 goals are the most scored against Houghton since 2014, when EC logged a 15-8 win in the series.
- For the fourth consecutive game to start her collegiate career, Ferguson scored five goals.
- Ferguson is the first Soaring Eagle with at least five goals in four straight games since 2016, when the program's all-time scoring leader, Moorea Spoljaric '16, pieced together a five-game streak. That year, Spoljaric set Elmira's single-season record with 66 goals in 15 games.
- Carfello made her 2021 debut in the win and netted her 34th career goal.
